How to Build Your Own Go-Kart Kit? Don’t Miss this Guide

gokart2

Do you know that building your own go-kart kit is actually simpler than you thought it was? A proper guide is just all the major arsenal you need to have in your wealth of technical knowledge to successfully construct the go-kart. You will be marveled at the potency of what you could achieve with your bare hands and an efficient guide. Stay glued to this article and you will be taken through the components and how to effectively handle each of the components in a kit. Bear in mind, the process is super easy, clear, and well enjoyable.

We are kickstarting with the components because it’s crucial you get the right orientation about each component. Looking at it from the right perspective will aid your ability to construct the go-kart yourself without any physical human presence. But before we delve into this part, as a mind preparatory nugget, you should know that you first need to get a go-kart plan.

As you must have noticed, several go-kart plans exist. You must have decided what you want your go-kart to look like in the end. That will shape your efforts towards creating your exact imagination.

Building Your Own Go-Kart Kit

Plans

A plan is a pattern you want your go-kart to follow and what you want it to look like. A lot of times go-kart plans are sold but trust me it’s worth getting. It usually states the exact measurements; dimensions, and other useful, accurate, and core prescriptions for the coupling of the exact plan you chose. We are able to come up with a definite way to build any go-kart because essentially go-karts, no matter the brand or plan imitate themselves in terms of structure and basic components. Other major components include

  • Steering
  • Frame
  • Rear
  • Axle
  • Engine Cables

Asides the planning we mentioned above, you need to also consider and do some things like

Plan your overall project

This involves getting a sketch and graphical illustration of what you want your go-kart to look like. Go-karts are very flexible and you can always play with the design according to what you want it to look like at the end of the day.

Ascertain the size of your go-kart

This is a crucial consideration. You are basically asking yourself here who is going to be driving this go-kart. A smaller go-kart obviously and logically would be more suiting for a child.

Obtain the necessary elements you need to couple

This could be largely by purchase or just picking up parts from your environment which can be useful. You could use materials such as shopping carts, recliners, wood, mower, and the likes that you are no longer using and create a go-kart with them.

The number of materials you get from your environment will dictate the total cost you would incur at the end of the day. Though obtaining a no-weld go-kart kit will in some instances require no need for welding at all, but in general, building your go-kart kit, you will need to weld a lot of times.

This article assumes that you have these basic components in your go-kart kit. It is, however, important to note that there is no one way to building a go-kart kit. There are several ways to it. This is merely one of those many ways. Though all generally imitate the same pattern

1.Steering

The steering system allows the go-kart to move in a certain direction and be swayed along a desired course. Almost every automobile has a steering system. You don’t want to create an object that just moves without direction or that cannot be at all controlled.

How do you handle this part?

You have to weld a steering block, an upper one to be precise to the top of the go-karts steering. The steering wheel has to be attached to the steering part through welding. After this, you will properly screw the steering wheel well enough to the shaft (steering shaft).

Nylock nuts could come in pretty handy here. You are going to use them to bolt spherical rods, a pair actually to the arm of the steering just at the bottom of the shaft. Spindle brackets are then to be joined to the half-baked steering system.

They will be welded to the frame’s front corner. You can constantly pause for a bit to observe the correctness of what you are doing. Each brackets stub axle will be into the front wheels. Now about the rims, you would bolt them into the hubs after you must have mounted the front tires on them.

2. Frame

The frame is the body of your go-kart. It is the skeletal system where all other things fit into eventually. This basically requires cutting with accuracy to a certain shape or length with a hacksaw or a chop depending on which one you have at your disposal. You have to clamp the steel in a vise and make the edges smooth and contour-free.

3.Rear axle

Different materials can be used as rear axles depending on your choice and suitability in different instances. You could use a seamless pipe with a certain level of thickness if it’s a hollow axle you want. To join this to the go-kart in process, the bearing Rangers are connected to the surface of the rear leg. Make the brake drum, uni-hub, and sprocket on the axle.

After this, the bearing cassettes will be welded together with bearings and one of the tools in the bearing kit will be used to connect the cassettes to the hangers. On the edge of the axle, you will fix the rims and couple your tire composition, and bolt them firmly to the wheel hub.

4.Engine

Go-kart engines are what basically power go-karts. The go-kart engine is what propels it to move at all. The efficiency or capacity of an engine determines the speed of the go-kart.

We have different kinds of go-kart engines; the low-powered ones and the racing engines which are super fast.

How do you incorporate the go-kart engine?

You could buy accessories together with the engine. The purpose of this is to ensure the adaptability of the engine to the body of the go-kart in process. As always, you have to weld again. This time you will be required to weld to the rear of the frame a mounting plate.

A mounting plate is one of those accessories mentioned earlier; it makes it easier to attach certain components to other objects which is a go-kart in this particular instance. Mounting plates generally have uses outside go-kart construction.

After you must have welded the mounting plate the right place which is the rear of the frame, you will bring the sprocket to the center and attach through bolting the engine. You will then fasten screws in the clutch hub to add a clutch to the body of the engine crankshaft. What next? The uni-hub has to align the sprocket of the axle to be in a harmonious position with the clutch sprocket.

Last two course of actions is to weld a bent3/8-inch rod firmly to a frame so it extends past the break to connect with the brake band, make sure the screws on the drum, bearings, and uni-hub are firmly knot, wire chains around the sprocket, and detach the links to make the chain have a ½ kind of balance.

5.Cables

Cables are a lot of times a common part of most go-kart designs and automobiles generally. They are used as stops to connect the brake to other components. We cannot emphasize enough how crucial the kit is.

How do you handle the cables in the go-kart construction?

You will first attach the brake and the cables (throttle) to the throttle cables on both the right and the left sides. Stretch the cables to the rear where they can connect with the frame sheaths. Pull the cable very hard and ensure that there is tension.

Next up, we need to seize the motion of the axle, to do this you will need to use wires as stops to firmly attach them to the brake band at the upper end. Pin the cable i.e. the throttle cable in an idle position and connect a kill switch, then move the cable to the engine. You can now start your go-kart to see if anything is wrong with the connections.

You also will need a seat. The foam will perfectly handle this need. Cut a large chunk of foam, attach maybe to plywood and then bolt properly to the go-kart. And there you go, you have your amazing go-kart kit successfully coupled and functioning appropriately.

Going over the processes again to refresh your memory, here are your major components Steering Frame Rear Axle Engine Cables These are the list of components and accessories you need to get and couple together. You might also be wondering,

How much does it cost to build my Go-kart kit?

This question is largely dependent on what kind of go-kart kit you want and what useful scraps and equipment do you already have in your possession. A good plan usually goes from between $80 -$700, even above in some instances.

It is always an amazing experience doing it yourself, you get to add to the wealth of experience and knowledge apart from saving cost. There is also a sense of pride and ownership purchasing a readymade go-kart might not be able to offer you. Follow each step meticulously and you would be amazed at your final outcome.
